Tech-life Balance: How Screens And Devices Affect Your Fertility

Psychiatry & Counsellors | 18 February 2026

Laptops on laps. Phones in bed. Late-night scrolling. It’s normal life now—but your reproductive system may not be loving it.

Heat and Sperm Health

For men, testicles are outside the body for a reason: sperm production works best a little cooler than core body temperature. Long hours with a warm laptop on your lap or tight synthetic underwear can increase local temperature and negatively impact sperm quality.

Blue Light, Sleep & Hormones

Both men and women rely on good quality sleep for hormone regulation. Blue light from screens suppresses melatonin, the sleep hormone, which in turn can disrupt:

  • Testosterone production in men
  • Reproductive hormone balance and cycles in women

Practical Tech Hygiene Tips
  • Use a table or laptop stand instead of your lap
  • Keep phones away from the groin area when possible
  • Aim for a screen curfew 60–90 minutes before bed
  • Use blue-light filters or night mode in the evening
  • Charge devices outside the bedroom if possible

If you’re planning a family or already struggling to conceive, it’s worth checking the full fertility picture. Book a fertility consultation to understand all the factors—including lifestyle and tech—that might be at play.
